WCR research grants |
The Worldwide Cancer Research (formerly known as Association for International Cancer Research, AICR) has published its 2014 calls research grants, with the goal to fund scientific research that may, in future, help reduce the incidence of cancer or improve cancer survival.
Aim of the call: WCR awards grants to support basic or translational research into the causes, mechanisms, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of cancer. AICR will not accept applications for clinical or psychosocial research and other types of applied cancer research.
Further information on the specific aspects covered and not covered by the call are specified in their Application Handbook.
Participants eligibility: WCR project grants are awarded to a single applicant, who is known as the principal investigator (PI) or grantholder. For collaborative projects one of the collaborators must be designated as the PI. The PI must be based at and have a contract (of employment, honorary appointment or equivalent) with a recognised, non-profit, research institution (i.e. university, hospital or research institute), anywhere in the world, for (at least) the duration of the grant requested.
The PI will usually be a PhD-qualified tenured or tenure-track research group leader. Post-doctoral researchers with more than 3 years postdoctoral research experience are also eligible to apply for a grant. Post-doctoral applicants who are not yet independent researchers must name their group head as co-applicant on the grant. Moreover, applicants without a PhD who have equivalent research experience may also be considered, but WCR ask that they confirm their eligibility by emailing the Head of Research before starting to prepare the application.
A research group can only submit a single application as PI to Worldwide Cancer Research once a year. One researcher can be PI on one application and a co-applicant or collaborator on other applications at the same time.
Support and funding: WCR awards grants for 1 to 3-years projects with a maximum budget permitted is £250,000; including all indirect and overhead costs. It should be noted that most of our 3-year grants have a budget of less than £200,000.
Submission and deadlines: WCR has two application rounds each year: April and October. Applications are now invited for submission from 1st October 2014 until 31st October 2014 (17h, British Local time).
Internal deadline for application at VHIR: 24th October 2014.
