The Chiesi Foundation:

Aim : Research grants are awarded to the recipients to fund research in the area of respiratory and neonatal diseases or in other scientific relevant areas, with the aim of better understanding the patients’ needs and improve their management, through the study of physiopathological mechanisms and phenotypes, as well as through the analysis of psychological aspects and socio-economic factors.

Proposals:

- Neonatology :

   - Objective 1. Describe novel functional, biochemical and genomic biomarkers to predict long-term pulmonary outcomes in preterm babies.

   - Objective 2. Identify neonatal/perinatal diseases and prematurity risk factors and/or preventative strategies within low-income populations       including but not only maternal lifestyle, prenatal care and environmental factors.

   - Objective 3. Identify novel biomarkers to monitor brain injury progression in the first months of life and/or predict long-term outcome.

- Pulmonary :

    - Objective 1. Investigate the personal, social and health system-related factors influencing compliance/adherence to treatment in patients with asthma and COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease), with particular focus on low income Countries.   

    - Objective 2. Study the interaction between indoor/outdoor pollution and the human lung, including effects on small airways and predisposition to airway diseases (e.g. asthma).

    - Objective 3. Develop single reproducible and validated methods (lung function, cell biology, imaging, etc.) or their combination for the diagnosis of small airways disease.

Budget: A single research project (max 3 years) can be funded up to 30,000 euro per year including 10% indirect costs.
