HFSP Research Grants |
Dear Researchers,
We are pleased to inform you that the call of Human Frontier Science Program (HFSP) is now open and will close the next 30th of March 2020.
Aim: to support innovative basic research into fundamental biological problems with emphasis placed on novel and interdisciplinary approaches that involve scientific exchanges across national and disciplinary boundaries.
Two kinds of research grants:
1)Young Investigators’ Grants: Teams of scientists in the initial period of their independent careers, having completed one or two periods of postdoctoral training, and having obtained their doctoral degree (PhD, MD or equivalent) not longer than 10 years before the deadline for submission. A Young Investigator should be a project leader directing a research group, postdocs are not eligible.
2)Program Grants: Teams of independent researchers to develop new lines of research through the collaboration. All members of a Program Grant team must be in a position to initiate and direct their own independent lines of research. They must have full scientific and financial responsibility for their own laboratories, postdocs are not eligible.
Eligibility: All team members are expected to direct a research group (however small) and must have a doctoral degree (PhD, MD or equivalent). The HFSP award is not intended to create scientific independence, this is a decision of the research institute prior to the application. Only international research teams (with emphasis on intercontinental collaborations), not individual researchers, are eligible. Therefore, team members are expected to have their labs in different countries; they should not have collaborated before and must propose a project significantly different from their ongoing research.
Budget: The number of team members should be 2-4 unless a fifth member is clearly essential for the interdisciplinary nature of the project. Budget: $250,000 for a team of 2; $350,000 for a team of 3; and $450,000 for a team of 4 or more (amount awarded to the whole team per year for a period of 3 years).
Note that a budget proposal is not required at any stage of the application process. The funding permitted: equipment, materials and supplies, services, salaries*, communication expenses, travels and diets, and Overheads are 10%.
* The participation of additional personnel must be essential for the new collaborative research. Salary support or other direct remuneration cannot be allocated for the Principal Applicant or Co-Applicants or other faculty (including “summer salaries”). Salaries are allowable for research assistants (post-doctoral scientists, graduate students, technicians) but not for institutional staff.
Deadlines:
- Compulsory initiation of a letter of Intent by obtaining a LIXXXX/2021 reference number by March 19th 2020 in the address https://extranet.hfsp.org/AllApplication/Default.aspx
- Submit the “letter of intent” before March 30th 2020, check the Writing a letter of intent document.
- Invitation to full application on July. Deadline of full application: mid-September 2020.
- Awards announcement March 2021
