Doctors and researchers at Vall d'Hebron University Hospital (HUVH) have solved a severe case of myelomeningocele during pregnancy in a baby who had been diagnosed with this severe malformation before she was born through an exceptional intrauterine surgical procedure. This is the first time that an intervention of this kind is performed in Catalonia, when applying a minimally invasive open fetal surgery for the fetus of a very serious case such as myelomeningocele or spina bifida, a congenital disorder that affects the central nervous system and, in life, results in paralysis of the lower extremities with difficulty or inability to walk, as well as sphincter incontinence. It is also the first time this procedure is made with a pioneer technique in the world, which has been designed and developed in rabbits and sheep at Vall d'Hebron Research Institute (VHIR).
