Vall d'Hebron University Hospital hosted on May 9th the 10th edition of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Day, a scientific and spreading event which is a reference in Spain, attended by 300 patients and families. During the whole day several specialists made relevant presentations in relation with this complex syndrome that determines and limits functionally the physical and intellectual activities of the affected patients.
In the morning session there were presentations about chronic fatigue in men, the impact of fibromyalgia in chronic fatigue syndrome, intolerance to gluten and mechanisms involved in the recovery after the physical exercise of the patient. The most innovative conference of the Day this year has been the one related to the electromagnetic hypersensitivity, by Dr. Magda Havas, from Trent's University (Canada). Dr. Havas is considered to be one of the top authorities in this field and has explained how this is diagnosed, how the stratification of the hypersensitivity is valued, which are the mechanisms of its pathogeny and how it is possible to advance in the prevention.
The Chronic Fatigue group at Vall d'Hebron Research Institute (VHIR), directed by Dr. Jose Alegre, coordinator of the event, is on the verge of initiating a collaboration with the group of Dr. Havas to make studies of basic and clinical research in electromagnetic hypersensitivity of chronic fatigue syndrome.
In the afternoon were presented the results and the evolution of diverse investigations on the personality of chronic fatigue patients, the biomarkers, the impact of the future therapeutic immunomodulation in the treatment of chronic fatigue syndrome and on the impact of the chronic fatigue as one of the causers of the school failure.
May 12 is the International Awareness Day of Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.
